Theory test
Booking your theory test
Before you are eligible to take your practical driving test, you must sit and pass the theory test.
The easiest way to book your theory test is by doing it online. Go to www.direct.gov.uk and complete the onscreen instructions. Once you’ve booked it, you’ll receive important documents through the post within seven days. You’ll have to take these documents with you on the big day.
If you prefer you can book the test on the phone. Ring the DVLA on 0300 200 1122.
It is important that you do not leave your theory test until the last minute, for you cannot sit your practical test until you have passed the theory test.
What to expect
The theory test is made up of two separate parts. You must pass both of these parts in order to get your theory certificate. If you pass one and fail the other, you will have to do both parts again, even the one you passed!
The first part is made up of fifty multiple choice questions. The questions cover a range of different driving subjects, from road signs to drink driving. In order to pass you must answer at least 43 questions correctly.
Once you have completed the first part, you move to the second part, which is known as the Hazard Perception module. This involves watching video clips on the computer screen, and responding to any hazards that appear – for example, children playing in the road – by clicking you mouse. You must score at least 45 out of 75 in order to pass this section.
Once the test is over, the staff at your test centre will tell you if you have passed or not. If you have passed you will have two years in which to pass your practical test. If you fail to pass your practical test in this time period, you will have to take the theory test again.
If you have any queries about the theory test, feel free to voice them when you register your details with us. Alternatively, go to www.direct.gov.uk/en/motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/theoryTest/index.htm, where there should be answer to your question.
